Elena Kountoura, Greek Tourism Minister on Monday showcased the tourism policy of Greece to the European leaders in tourism, during the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) first Europe Leaders Forum that was organized in Lisbon, Portugal.
Arranged to fortify the work of the WTTC on tourism development in Europe and offer a platform in terms of networking of tourism leaders, the Europe Leaders Forum is the first in a series of regional events that took place this year. The event drew more than 150 leaders from all over the region.
Representing Greece, Minister Kountoura displayed high tourism performance of the country in the last four years, emphasizing that the priority of the tourism policy of the country is to set up economic and development benefits across the country.
While delivering her speech, the minister mentioned new opportunities as well as challenges that came to the forefront because of the booming tourism growth and presented development planning of Greece which highlights priority to sustainable and balanced tourism development.
As per the minister, tourism can and must, with the help of cooperation between governments, institutions and private sectors, become a high priority area in terms of shaping local, national and European policies. Also, minister Kountoura highlighted the four prime issues for Europe as discussed during WTTC’s forum:
– sustainable tourism development and the development of urban tourism in particular
– relationship between tourism and the future of employment
– promotion of tourism investment
– support of innovation in the sector
